Jefferson Sinclair, a Rural Strategies intern and student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, learned about various state bills that seek to deregulate basic telephone service across the country (such as SB 1161 in California and SB 271 in Ohio). As an economics major, he wanted to consider two sides of this issue: the companies supporting these bills and the rural consumers who would be disconnected. The Center for Rural Strategies has joined organizations and individuals from around the country asking the Federal Communications Commission to make increased diversity in broadcast and broadband media a higher priority.

The promise of broadband to decrease the economic and social gap between rural and metropolitan areas is going unfulfilled, said Tim Marema, vice president of the Center for Rural Strategies, in a presentation at a Federal Communications Commissioner workshop.
