CBS television never produced the "Real Beverly Hillbillies." They did not explain why or say that it would not be produced. They just stopped talking about it.
We count that as a victory for rural America.

Dear Messrs. Karmazin and Redstone:
We are writing to express our concern about the plans of CBS Television to produce a reality program called The Real Beverly Hillbillies. This plan - to take a poor rural family, place them in a Hollywood mansion and ridicule them on national television - is in poor taste and shameful. The AFL-CIO represents more than 13 million workers from all walks of life and any program that would make fun of, or humiliate, any sector of our population would be a disgrace. Working people in this country deserve better, especially during these difficult economic times when many families are barely able to make ends meet.
We lend our voices to those of other individuals and organizations in urging you to cancil plans for this program.
Sincerely,
John J. Swenney
