CBS television never produced the "Real Beverly Hillbillies." They did not explain why or say that it would not be produced. They just stopped talking about it.
We count that as a victory for rural America.

RE: The Real Beverly Hillbillies
Dear Messrs. Karmazin and Mr. Redstone,
I join several international unions, dozens of community groups, and a number
of members of Congress in opposition to your proposed "reality"
program The Real Beverly Hillbillies. It has come hard to realize just
how low some well stoop to get laughs at another's expense. I thought Americans
had finally decided stereotyping is morally reprehensible. Maybe I'm wrong.
Apparently CBS thinks that Americans will laugh at hard-working people form the
mountains of Kentucky without guilt
I can tell you that the hundreds of thousands of us in the Kentucky labor
movement won't think it's funny. Many of us live in the country, and we take a
dim view of anyone putting down the rural way of life. It's a cheap shot, and I
strongly urge you to re-think production of this condescending put-down before
it's too far underway.
Sincerely,
Chris Sanders, Secretary-Treasurer
